I think we need to move on from the current obsession with fathers, and look deeper. The nuclear family isn't the historical norm; the extended family is. A few generations ago there would have been uncles, aunties, grandparents, and so on, and if the father wasn't around, someone else would have covered. We've almost destroyed the extended family with our ultra-mobile society, so when there's a problem, families lack the support they need. There's your real problem.
